Bejin Bieneman PLC Diversity Scholarship Program

Bejin Bieneman, PLC, is offering Scholarships for Diversity in Patent Law, to encourage traditionally underrepresented groups to go into the practice of patent law.  Scholarship opportunities include paid internships or clerkships to allow students to gain experience with patent law.  Law students with qualifying technical undergraduate degrees as well as undergraduates earning technical degrees may apply for scholarships.

Bejin Bieneman, PLC, is proud to announce its Law Student Scholarship for Diversity in Patent Law. To help bring those in traditionally underrepresented groups into the practice of patent law, we are offering up to two scholarships to J.D. candidates. (See our diversity page for information on our scholarship for undergraduate students.)

Benefits

  • $10,000 law school tuition reimbursement.
  • Paid internship / clerkship with our firm, where you will learn how to write a patent application and other important aspects of patent law.

Eligibility

Candidates eligible for the Scholarship are:

  • Women; students of African American, Hispanic, or Native American background; or students from other underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Current or incoming full- or part-time students at an accredited law school in the state of Michigan with at least two semesters to complete before receiving a J.D.
  • Graduates of an accredited four-year institution of higher learning with a degree that qualifies one to sit for the patent bar exam administered by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.[1]

  • A short (500 words or less) statement explaining why you want to be a patent lawyer, and how you believe you would contribute to diversity of the profession.
  • A representative sample of your writing (for example, from a legal writing or undergraduate history or literature class).
  • Undergraduate and (if applicable) law school transcript(s).
  • A resume describing your experience, education, honors and awards, and any other information to help us understand your qualifications.
  • Two letters of recommendation from a professor (undergraduate or law school) or an employer who has supervised your work.
  • Complete contact information.

Other Information

  • The financial award will be disbursed upon receipt of proof of enrollment in an accredited law school in the state of Michigan.
  • The internship requires a commitment of at least 30 hours per week for three to six months, and will be compensated at our standard hourly rate for law clerks.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with degrees in electrical engineering, physics, computer science, mechanical engineering, or related fields.
  • We hope to award two Law Student Scholarships per school year but may award more or none depending on the applications we receive.

Bejin Bieneman, PLC, is proud to announce its Engineering Student Scholarship for Diversity in Patent Law. To help bring those in traditionally underrepresented groups into the practice of patent law, we are offering a scholarship to undergraduate engineering students with an interest in the legal profession. (See our diversity page for information on our scholarship for law students.)

Benefits

  • $2500 tuition reimbursement.
  • Paid internship with our firm, where you will learn about patent law.

Eligibility

Candidates eligible for the Scholarship are:

  • Women; students of African American, Hispanic, or Native American background; or students from other underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Michigan residents, meaning graduates of high schools in Michigan and/or full-time students at Michigan colleges or universities.
  • Current or incoming full- or part-time students at an accredited four-year college or university with four semesters or fewer to complete a B.S. degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or physics.

  • The internship requires a commitment of at least 25 hours per week for ten weeks, and will be compensated on an hourly basis.
  • We hope to award one Undergraduate Engineering Scholarship for the 2019-2020 school year but may award more or none depending on the applications we receive.
