Kevin Hinman is an intellectual property attorney with more than 30 years of law firm and corporate law department experience. Kevin has handled patent prosecution matters for clients in both corporate and firm environments, and has drafted a wide range of intellectual property (“IP”) related agreements, including technology license agreements, joint development agreements, and confidentiality agreements. He has also conducted freedom to practice investigations, infringement analyses, and patentability studies. Technologies that Kevin has worked with include medical devices, powertrain control software, transmissions, hybrid powertrains, hydroforming of steel components, and plastic extrusion methods.

Prior to Kevin’s joining Bejin Bieneman, he provided in-house intellectual property legal support to several business units of a large, diversified manufacturer. That support included training employees on IP issues, reviewing and drafting a wide range of IP agreements including technology licenses, joint development agreements, consulting agreements, and confidentiality agreements. Kevin also provided legal opinions on IP matters and prepared patent applications directed to his business units’ technologies. In an in-house role at a leading medical device manufacturer, Kevin provided patent prosecution support, drafting applications and overseeing patent prosecution for a wide variety of devices. Prior to his in-house positions, Kevin was a member/partner in the IP practice group of a large Michigan-based general practice law firm. Kevin prosecuted patent applications, provided legal opinions on patent matters, and provided IP reviews of transactional agreements. Kevin began his legal career with the patent department of a domestic motor vehicle OEM where he prepared patent applications and provided IP counseling to divisional clients.

Prior to attending law school, Kevin was an engineer with the General Motors product engineering group in Warren, Michigan. Kevin worked as a test engineer on transmissions and on chassis components, and also as a release engineer for chassis systems.

Kevin is a graduate of University of Michigan Law School (J.D., 1991). He also earned a Master of Business Administration (1986) and a Master of Science Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (1980) from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Kevin earned his Bachelor of Science, Mechanical Engineering (1978) at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
